The Faces By Design Turn-Key Multimedia
Training Program Overview

Thank you for your interest in the Faces By Design Turn-Key Multimedia Fundamental Training Program (FBD Program.) This overview is written with the goal of enlightening viewers to the value of these professionally developed permanent cosmetic training materials.

Students learn by reading, listening, and conducting hands-on procedures.

The FBD Program provides a comprehensive and considered method for guiding students through the permanent cosmetic fundamental learning process.

The textbook, Permanent Cosmetics – The Foundation of Fundamental Applications, is the students’ initial journey into an all-inclusive look into permanent cosmetics. This textbook was written by Marjorie Grimm and published by the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP.) It is noteworthy that this textbook has been approved by the New Mexico State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology as a resource for training permanent cosmetics in that state. Critical subjects are discussed in detail and unique pictorial examples are provided as visuals for the more difficult to explain subjects.  The textbook is written in a manner that takes the reader into the industry methodically, providing a knowledge-growth pattern section by section.

Authored by Marjorie Grimm in collaboration with other industry leaders, who are experts in related fields, is one of its “claims to fame” considering that most other textbooks (or training manuals) about permanent cosmetics are written from one perspective by one person.  In this textbook, the students receive factual information from a variety of respected and credentialed sources.

After the textbook has been read by the student, (often this is completed during a pre-class study period) she or he is then prepared for the on-site class period where the now familiar subjects will be discussed, many with the support of PowerPoint programs that are included in the FBD Program. Students then have the opportunity to “listen and see” support information initially covered in the textbook, but with the benefit of a trainer to address questions and to provide greater detail as needed.

There are eleven (11) PowerPoint programs included in the FBD Program. Unique photographs (one picture is worth a thousand words) were accumulated over time with a specific subject matter targeted, as its potential placement feature.  Each frame of each of these exclusive programs provide educational text information as well as a corresponding photograph(s) where appropriate.  Collectively there are five-hundred (500) frames of student-critical educational information; all with custom animation incorporated.

All elements of the textbook and PowerPoint programs are non-product and non-device specific.  Although pictures are shown of activities requiring the use of a device, or a product such as an anesthetic, product or device identification is purely visual and not an identified element in the FBD Program.  All device types are as equally represented as possible.

In order for the FBD Program to be appealing and equally practical for all trainers, the absence of product names and devices is advantageous.  This provides trainers the ability to introduce their preferences during the classroom period. The following is an informative look into each of the PowerPoint programs:

Permanent Cosmetic Color Theory™

Until this innovative program was developed, the permanent cosmetic industry long depended upon the traditional artists’ color theory and supporting color wheel as a basis for permanent cosmetic color theory. Ultimately this approach was deemed insufficient and lacking a focus on the unique aspects of pigments used for tattooing.

The differences between traditional color theory and color theory employed in permanent cosmetic color application are presented in a revolutionary manner in this PowerPoint program. Rarely discussed issues such as the behavior of light and how it plays an important part in how our procedures are seen (additive color theory) are reviewed. The behavior of pigments, inks and dyes (subtractive color theory) dictates color theory for the traditional artist who paints on a nonliving canvas. The required departure from traditional color theory by permanent cosmetic technicians addresses the introduction of color into a living canvas that has color of its own.

Once this program has been presented, students have specific color theory knowledge unique to cosmetic tattooing.

There are one-hundred-five (105) frames in` the PowerPoint program with copyrighted color wheels that were developed to ensure the viewer grasps the understanding of color theory as it is applied to permanent cosmetics.  This program may also be presented as a continuing education class. <view samples>

Skin Undertones and Permanent Cosmetics

The client’s skin undertone is a primary consideration when selecting a pigment color for a particular procedure on a canvas with a specific color.  The act of tattooing a color into living tissue that has color of its own will ultimately produce a third color.  Identification of skin undertones has proven to be a challenge; one that is critical to meeting a client’s color request.  Over an extended period of time, supported by respected permanent cosmetic professionals with esthetics and pigment formulation backgrounds, this program adapted a beautiful and collectively agreed-upon structure.  This PowerPoint program is exclusive in its detail and comprehensive presentation of skin undertones.

There are seventy-one (71) frames in this PowerPoint program with pictorial examples of each of the recognized skin undertone types.  Each type is expanded upon by offering common characteristics to look for, and pigment base suggestions for eyebrow pigment selections.  This is truly a one-of-a-kind program that all trainers should have in their inventory of training tools.  This program may also be presented as a continuing education class. <view samples>

Permanent Cosmetic Color Refreshers, Adjustments and Corrections

In order to effectively learn how to refresh, adjust, or correct a color, it is important to understand why the color appears different than anticipated, or if the procedure has aged, why it appears different from how it appeared soon after healing.

In some instances, it is a matter of refreshing an existing color that has naturally faded over time. In other instances, an adjustment may be needed in order to achieve the desired color at the follow-up appointment due to a more conservative color being used at the initial appointment.

Using the words “color corrections” applies, and often rightly so, because an incorrect pigment color was used on a particular skin undertone type. Or, the skin undertone changed with age and the pigment now appears less desirable. In order to achieve the desired goals, color corrections require an astute knowledge of color theory as it relates to cosmetic tattooing. The Permanent Cosmetic Color Adjustments and Corrections PowerPoint and lecture program provides a comprehensive look into this important subject.  The Permanent Cosmetic Color Adjustments and Corrections PowerPoint program leaves no stone unturned on these subject matters.  The viewer is given insight as to the “whys” of color changes, provided with industry accepted solutions relying on the appropriate pigment base content for each of the more common correction equations. Ample pictorial examples of restoration of desired color by using their color theory skills are provided.  This program contains copyrighted, professionally developed color wheels unique to the application of permanent cosmetic applied color theory as an innovative approach to teaching color correction concepts.

This PowerPoint program contains seventy-four frames (74) of conventional and new theories associated with overall restoration of a desired color.  This program may also be presented as a continuing education class. <view samples>

A Different Slant on Eyebrows

Students who pursue permanent cosmetic training should have a working knowledge of topical makeup eyebrow design and facial morphology theory. Working with the accepted measurements for eyebrows drawn on the different facial morphology shapes is important.  Clients present a multitude of challenging eyebrow placement and natural eyebrow color issues that technicians must be prepared to resolve.

The client has had years to become accustomed to how she or he draws on the eyebrow design; they have often used a particular color for as many years as well. This PowerPoint and lecture program presents the reality of common eyebrow deficiencies that clients bring to the permanent cosmetic technician for eyebrow tattooing. Students must be prepared to work with asymmetric natural eyebrow placement and, when appropriate, have the ability to closely match the topical makeup color the client is accustomed to seeing.

This PowerPoint program contains sixty-two (62) examples of the multiplicity of natural eyebrows the student, as a technician, will be asked to improve aesthetically with tattooing, and proposed solutions for improvement.  This program may also be offered as a continuing education class.<view samples>

Eyeliner Procedures

Eyeliner procedures are an important subject to discuss in detail in the classroom.  The body protects the eye, a vital organ, from possible obtrusions. The protective “radar” system around the eyes is impressive; some people cannot even put eye drops in their eyes without difficulty. The Eyeliner Procedures PowerPoint program explores the eyeliner procedures. The eyeliner canvas and possible abnormalities of the eyeliner canvas, which may prevent an eyeliner procedure from being performed safely, are presented.

Appropriate width/designs for novice technicians are shown as examples. Pigment color selections are discussed; stretching techniques are offered as suggested control methodologies; and proper application and removal of anesthetics are subjects revisited.

In the second section of this program, advanced eyeliner procedures are addressed.  Advanced eyeliner procedures include wider width eyeliners with “taper and tip” flow to the design work, and what is often referred to as “smudged” eyeliner.  This is an advanced section of the program and appropriate for as a continuing education class.

This PowerPoint program contains forty-nine (49) frames.  The portion of the program appropriate for a fundamental program class consists of thirty-eight frames with the remainder applying to a continuing educational class offering. <view samples>

Lip Liners and Shaded Lip Liner Procedures

The Lip Liners and Shaded Lip Liners PowerPoint program introduces students to lip color procedures that are appropriate for the novice technician.  While some trainers feel all lip color work is more appropriate in a continuing education class, and as a result do not offer lip color in a fundamental class, some trainers may feel otherwise and offer it.  This is an optional element of the SPCP required trainer member class curriculum.

This program explores the elements associated with quality lip liner work and the addition of shading to blend with the natural tone of the client’s lip as a popular procedure.  Most importantly, there is an emphasis of not creating a “ring around the mouth” appearance with lip liners and shaded lip liners that would require the client to wear lipstick to appear “complete.”  Also critical to the novice technician are pictorial examples of clients who are not good candidates for any lip color work.

The Lip Liners and Shaded Lip Liners PowerPoint program consists of thirty-seven (37) frames of examples of professionally tattooed lip liner and shaded lip liner work with additional features speaking to complications created by departing from the natural lip line. <view samples>

Permanent Cosmetics - Safety in the Workplace

This PowerPoint program is a synopsis of workplace safety practices.  In regard to a formal OSHA blood borne pathogens program, it is the belief of industry leaders that students benefit far more from an in-person or SPCP supported on-line OSHA blood borne pathogens program, independent of the on-site permanent cosmetic class period.  Under ideal conditions, the OSHA blood borne pathogens program should be taken before the class commences.  A practical presentation and review of critical workplace safety elements, as provided in the Safety in the Workplace program is an important approach in which to begin a fundamental class that will include hands-on practical work.

There are forty (40) frames in this PowerPoint program with examples of PPE, sharps, hand washing techniques, barrier film use, and other workplace safety related subject matters. <view samples>

Client Management – Mind Over Matter

This PowerPoint program provides students with time-proven techniques for managing their clients. A common subject is how to address client concerns, often expressed about the procedure during a consultation, such as discomfort they may experience during the procedural process. Students are frequently apprehensive regarding how they will maintain client comfort, and how to communicate and translate client body language during a procedure. There is special attention to instilling client trust, positive workplace environmental elements, and standard client management techniques employed during the procedure process.

There are thirty-nine (39) fames in this PowerPoint program each providing proven client management techniques employed during the procedure process.<view samples>

Proper Use of Anesthetics

Anesthetics are effective tools used in conjunction with client management; the objective being to provide client comfort and technician control during the tattooing process. This program is non-product specific.  Its focus is how anesthetics work and how they are properly applied and removed for each fundamental procedure type.  These subjects play an important part in the effectiveness of anesthetics and importantly, maintaining client safety during their use.  Other subjects explored are what are common ingredients in over-the-counter (OTC) anesthetics formulated for our industry?  Should anesthetics be occluded?  What are the properties of pre-broken and post-broken skin anesthetics?

There are twenty-two (22) frames in this PowerPoint program, each with an important message to the student regarding the appropriate use of one of their most important client management tools, anesthetics. <view samples>

What’s My Eyebrow Color?

The What’s My Eyebrow Color? PowerPoint program is used in conjunction with a printed-out version (student workbook) of the same information. The workbook, which contains twenty-five (25) pictures of women with a variety of skin undertones, is provided to students as a color study project. Students are directed to select a pigment color that they have been exposed to and used during class that they would offer to each woman as an eyebrow client. The associated PowerPoint version is used as visual support for discussion purposes as each student gives their eyebrow pigment selection information.

This PowerPoint program consists of twenty-two (22) frames of examples of women of different ages and Fitzpatrick types.<view samples>

 selecting permanent makeup pigmentsSelecting Pigments

Selecting pigments is of vital importance to the permanent cosmetic technician.  This review provides critical information regarding cool, warm and more neutral pigment color bases that are used for the eyebrow, eyeliner and lip color procedures.

There are nineteen (19) frames in this PowerPoint providing valuable educational guidance for a comprehensive pigment inventory selection. <view samples>

The 100-hour Class Lesson Plan

One of the most difficult aspects of preparing to be a trainer is to compile a class lesson plan based on a class that has never been given.  This task alone can discourage the most talented of prospective trainers.

The FBD Program includes an hour by hour, day by day, eleven page class lesson plan that is a superior guide for trainers.  Pre-class study project options are provided for consideration. The word “guide” is used because in the event the purchaser of the FBD Program wishes to rearrange the sequence of events to suit their unique preferences, the “License for Limited Use of the Faces By Design Permanent Cosmetic Turn-Key Fundamental Training Program” (an agreement required to be read and signed by the purchaser for the FBD Program) allows for trainer-specific rearrangement of subject and time allotment of the lesson plan.

This lesson plan has been reviewed and deemed acceptable by the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals.<view samples>

The Fundamental Permanent Cosmetic Proficiency Examination

At the completion of class it is advisable to test the proficiency of each student.  Trainers have an obligation, if only ethically, to ensure students retained critical information during their class.

This 200-question proficiency examination is provided in the FBD Program package with authorized variable usage.  Trainers may wish to extract a certain number of questions as a pre-class examination to ensure the textbook was thoroughly read by each student.  They may choose to give the remaining questions at the completion of class in conjunction with the “What’s My Eyebrow Color?” eyebrow color workbook project.  Some trainers may elect to include all 200 questions at the completion of class.  Each trainer has written authorization to use this test as they feel is advantageous to their training protocol within the Limited Licensing Agreement.

Each question presented is supported by three multiple-choice answers.  There is only one correct answer and two distracters.

Within the FBD Program there are two versions of the examination - One that is given to the student; and a trainer’s version that contains the correct answer and the location of the correct answer in the textbook.<view samples>

The Student Performance Evaluation Form

It’s very important for students to be made aware of their progress.  The Student Performance Evaluation Form provides the trainer with the means to provide students with a performance evaluation of their hands-on procedures conducted.  Critical elements such as health and safety, procedure design skills, pigment selection skills and much more are provided on the form.  With each critical element provide is space allotment to indicate their performance was “Good,” or “Needs Improvement,” as well as trainer recommendations.<view samples>

The Student Conducted Procedure(s) Listing Form

This form serves as a method for providing in-class and trainer maintained historical data associated with a specific student’s hands-on procedures.  Models are required to initial in the allotted space where they have agreed to be a model for a student for a specific procedure on a specified date.  Space allotment has also been provided for associated trainer notes. <view samples>

Student Business Forms

One of the most challenging aspects of beginning a new business or offering a new service in an existing business are forms the client completes before the service commences.

Students typically want to go to work immediately after class ends and the development of forms represents a delay in progress toward that end.  Included in the FBD Program package are forms without identification to a specific business or legal identity, are the following forms:

The program provides two sets of the forms cited above.  One set of the forms is provided with the following disclosure statement to the student:

DRAFT SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR REVISIONS UNDER DIRECTION OF LEGAL COUNSEL

The second set of forms is provided without this statement in the event the students choose to use the forms without further legal counsel.

The release of this program was formally be announced in the SPCP May edition of the SPCP Quarterly publication.  At the SPCP March 2008 convention, flyers were distributed and as a result several trainers have purchased the program.  On the following page are samples of the testimonials being received attesting to the quality of the FBD Program:

FBD Program Testimonials

From Marilyn Rustand, CPCP:

The Faces By Design Training Program is the best thing ever offered to trainers in the permanent cosmetic industry!  It is, simply put, Training Made Easy!

This comprehensive training program absolutely covers every base you can think of, and everything any trainer in the industry should be teaching to their students.

My most recent student enrolled last minute and was so anxious to learn permanent cosmetics and we scheduled her training dates to begin within ten days.  I had just received the FBD Training Program, so being it was new to my format of training class I wasn’t sure how to incorporate it into my current class structure and had little time to prepare for my student.   I had always used my own manual that I wrote when I first became a trainer and did a lot of lecture in class.

Using the FBD Training Program for the first time and under limited preparation for my training class, I was put to unbelievable ease in presenting my class to this student.  Following the Lesson Plan as outlined was simple and very organized in manner of topics.  And use of the PowerPoint programs limited my lecturing (which every student gets bored with!).   I never had to stop and think, “okay, what’s  next”?  I was the most comfortable I had ever been in any class I have ever taught over the past five years!

The FBD lesson plan and Power Point programs are superb!  And, with the use of the textbook, Permanent Cosmetics – the Foundation of Fundamental Applications together with the exceptionally professional Power Point programs, this is a training class structure that is second to none!

Brilliantly put together!  This training program will make a master trainer out of anyone!

From Patricia Yee, CPCP:

Dear Margie,

I just want to take a few minutes of your time and let you know how pleased I am with the Turn-Key Multimedia Fundamental Permanent Cosmetic Training Program I purchased from you right after the Houston Convention.  It's fabulous!!

If I had any doubt how I would proceed to train new students, you put that fear to rest.  The 100 hour class lesson plan allows me to smoothly move from topic to topic and I can't speak highly enough about the ten PowerPoint programs contained in the course and your pre-published version of the textbook Permanent Cosmetics - The Foundation of Fundamental Applications.  The information contained in your book is priceless.

You saved me countless hours of invaluable time and the tremendous effort that I would have spent compiling information for my training class.  I applaud your great undertaking.  I think this Training Program is a must for anyone wishing to train.  I also think individuals who are currently training would find this Training Program an excellent teaching tool.

Thanks again, Margie!

From Edine Swain, CPCP:

You have definitely made a benchmark in this industry. I'm so proud to know you.

A sincere thank you!

From Liza Sims, CPCP

Between the Permanent Cosmetics Textbook written by Margie Grimm of Faces By Design (FBD,) and the Power Point programs, there is now an easy answer to the age-old question “how do I find a good trainer?” It's easy: find someone whose work you like and who uses the FBD training materials.

The FBD training materials are well organized, impeccably laid out, easy to follow and applicable to all devices and pigment lines.

Marjorie Grimm has made my job much easier!
